Director of People and Culture Change

London Borough of Merton
Salary up to £116,300
Hackney

It couldn’t be a more exciting time to work at Merton Council. We are a borough on the rise, led by a fresh and ambitious new leadership and armed with some of the boldest transformation plans in London. Merton encompasses the towns of Colliers Wood, Mitcham, Morden and Wimbledon and is home to a vibrant, growing population of more than 220,000. We are proud custodians of some of the best sporting heritage in the world and Merton’s connectivity is unbeatable in south London; we are at the start of both the Northern and District Tube lines, which offer direct access into central London in just 20 minutes. We are a borough going places – we have a brand-new blueprint for the future that will see us unlock the full potential of our borough and build a better Merton together, putting the needs of our residents at the heart of everything we do.

THE ROLE

Merton Council is seeking an exceptional HR/OD professional to lead the development and support of our 2,500 strong workforce and play a key role in the leadership of our organisation.

This is a pivotal role for the transformation of the Council, leading the creation and delivery of a workforce strategy that will ensure we have the stable, sustainable, skilled, dynamic, and diverse workforce that we need to keep serving the residents and businesses of Merton into the future. You will balance creativity with pragmatism, and expertise with a desire to learn. You will bring substantial experience in a senior people role within a large organisation, with public sector experience an advantage, but not a necessity.

Whatever your background, you will demonstrate an interest in and commitment to local government, and an understanding of the political dimension to our work. You will have a demonstrable commitment to EDI, as we seek to ensure that our workforce reflects our communities, especially at a senior level. You will be an inclusive, values driven leader with expertise in HR advice, workforce strategy, organisational and culture change, and staff development. You will be a leader of change in an organisation with an appetite for doing things differently, and you will help us to become the employer of choice within South-West London, within local government, and for our local communities.
