Wirral is a borough on the move, with Birkenhead at the centre of one of the largest regeneration programmes in the North West, a waterfront being reshaped, and towns from New Brighton to Bromborough seeing renewed investment and ambition. The Council is looking for a Director of Housing and Communities to lead the services that underpin all of that and shape daily life for residents across the borough.
THE ROLE
This is one of the Council’s most ambitious portfolios, covering regeneration strategy and major projects, strategic planning and the Local Plan, development management, building control, employment and skills, heritage and urban design, culture, tourism and the visitor economy, town centres and place-based development, economic growth and investment, and the Council’s external funding and investment programmes. Reporting to the Executive Director of Place, you will play a central role in delivering the Council Plan and shaping how the borough grows.
With a clear regeneration framework already in place and significant investment coming into Wirral, the focus now is firmly on delivery, from major regeneration programmes and town centre renewal through to housing growth, strategic sites and transformational investment. You will combine professional planning expertise with strong commercial awareness and the ability to move at pace while maintaining sound governance and decision quality.
Partnership and influence sit at the heart of the role, and you will build effective relationships with developers, investors, government agencies and communities while representing Wirral at local, regional and national forums. The borough sits within the Liverpool City Region, and the Director will play an important part in ensuring Wirral secures its share of regional investment and opportunity.
We are looking for someone with a proven track record of delivering large-scale regeneration and development programmes in a politically sensitive environment, who can give clear, impartial and evidence-based advice to elected Members and handle high-profile matters with confidence. Above all, we want someone who can translate ambition into deliverable programmes and measurable outcomes for Wirral’s residents, businesses and communities.
