Wirral is a borough on the move, with Birkenhead at the centre of one of the largest regeneration programmes in the North West, a waterfront being reshaped, and towns from New Brighton to Bromborough seeing renewed investment and ambition. The Council is looking for a Director of Housing and Communities to lead the services that underpin all of that and shape daily life for residents across the borough.
THE ROLE
The Director of Housing and Communities leads a broad portfolio spanning strategic housing, resettlement, housing adaptations and disabled facilities grants, leisure, libraries, community hubs, community development and engagement including community safety, and corporate resilience and emergency planning. Reporting to the Executive Director of Place, you will lead the development and delivery of the Council’s housing and communities strategy, ensuring services are modern, inclusive, financially sustainable and firmly focused on residents.
The opportunity here is to lead these services as a coherent whole, recognising that housing outcomes, community strength, health and wellbeing and inclusion are closely connected and stronger when they are joined up. You will translate national policy, local evidence and community priorities into deliverable plans and maintain a strong delivery culture in which programmes progress at pace.
Partnership is central to the role, and you will work closely with registered providers, health partners, the voluntary and community sector and regional bodies to build the relationships that make things happen across organisational boundaries. You will also hold accountability for budgets and commercial management, identifying funding opportunities and maximising external investment to support the Council’s ambitions.
We are looking for someone who brings pace, credibility and the confidence to operate in a politically engaged environment, giving clear and impartial advice to elected Members. You will need resilience, sound judgement and a genuine commitment to embedding resident voice in how services are designed and delivered.
