St John is a unique international charity and Royal Order of Chivalry of the British Crown. Headquartered in London, St John Ambulance is itself a significant charity operating in a leading position in a modern and competitive world. Turning over around £100m annually it responds to health emergencies, supports communities, and saves lives – relying on public donations to do so. Since the onset of Covid-19, St John has provided over 1,000,000 hours of volunteer support to the NHS, on ambulances, in communities and caring for Covid-19 patients in hospitals as well as partnering with the NHS in vaccinating the nation.
The Role

We are seeking an individual of considerable stature, and with an exemplary record of achievement, to become the next Prior of England & The Islands. As head of the Priory, which is the holding body for St John Ambulance, you will chair the charity’s Board and provide strategic leadership and direction across a diverse and distinctive organisation. In addition to leading the Board of St John Ambulance, you will chair the Priory Chapter and Priory Council. 

This substantial and multifaceted leadership post requires highly effective skills in diplomacy, communication and governance. Unimpeachable personal credibility will be essential to represent the Priory within the Order internationally and to be an influential member of Grand Council. You will act as ambassador for St John, inspiring and engaging a wide range of stakeholders including our volunteers, and ensure the highest levels of probity and governance for St John Ambulance. Trusted across diverse communities, you will bring openness, objectivity and sound judgement to the role as well as a deep commitment to our values and mission.

Agreement of the final shortlist is likely to take place in w/c 17th January 2022.

Informal meetings / telephone calls will follow confirmation of the final shortlist and selected candidates will have the opportunity to speak with key stakeholders in w/c 24th January 2022.

Formal interviews for shortlisted candidates are expected to take place in w/c 7th February 2022.
