The challenges at Slough Borough Council are well documented, but there has been much less coverage of our recovery and improvement journey. There is a new corporate plan in place outlining Slough’s commitment to residents, including a determination to close the healthy life expectancy gap and improve the life chances of the borough’s children and young people. There is also a new top team in place – all focussed on turning the council around. We are now in the process of recruiting a new group of senior leaders to join us for what will undoubtedly be the biggest and the most rewarding challenge of their careers.
Our Director of Public Health, reporting directly to the Chief Executive, has a reconfigured remit which includes public protection as well as community wellbeing and partnerships. This approach will empower the DPH as well as give them key services to manage, and it responds directly to the findings of a peer review in elevating both the status and the scope of the role to drive better health outcomes in Slough.
We are seeking an inspirational system-leader who will drive improvements in the collective impact of public health, community, public protection and leisure services and interventions across Slough. They will improve opportunities and outcomes for residents and reduce inequalities, as well as play a pivotal strategic role in delivering the overall objective of Slough’s Corporate Plan – to close the healthy life expectancy gap.
The postholder must be a registered Public Health specialist who meets the criteria in the job description.
