Slough Borough Council is never far from the headlines at the moment – the challenges are well documented, but there’s been much less coverage of Slough’s recovery and improvement journey. There is a new corporate plan in place outlining Slough’s commitment to residents, including a determination to close the healthy life expectancy gap and improve the life chances of the borough’s children and young people. There is also a new top team in place – all focussed on turning the council around. Slough has already made some great progress but there are still mountains to climb. That is why the council is looking for an extraordinary group of senior leaders to join them for what will undoubtedly be the biggest and also the most rewarding challenge of their careers.
This includes a new Director of Property and Assets, who will report to the Executive Director of Regeneration, Housing and Environment and lead on the development of a coherent asset management strategy. The council owns many fantastic buildings and properties and is a highly desirable business location, but it needs to get better at managing what is now a large and disparate portfolio of council and commercial properties. This will involve a considerable disposal programme, and the council has already sold assets worth over £200m, with more in the pipeline.
In addition, it is vital that this service area is fully on top of the basics around FM and rent collection, and that it also develops effective partnerships with other public sector organisations as a part of the One Public Estate strategy.
The council is therefore seeking a commercially minded and driven Director who understands the challenges as well as the opportunities at Slough and wants to make a real and tangible difference. Your property experience could be gained across the public or private sectors, as long as you have the requisite professional background and understanding. This is also the chance for you to build your own team as Slough create a dynamic, focused and commercial service which will support the council’s wider corporate goals.
