Westmorland & Furness is a place like no other. A young and ambitious council serving one of the most beautiful and diverse areas in the UK, from our fells and lakes to vibrant towns and coastal communities. We are proud of our heritage, strong sense of community and growing national profile.

THE ROLE

Established in 2023, we have already achieved a huge amount: a ‘Good’ Ofsted rating for our Children’s Services, new bus routes to connect our communities, hundreds of grassroots projects supported, and our first solar farm up and running. But we are only just getting started.

As a new unitary authority, we set out on our journey with ambition, a clear vision and our organisational values, and we have delivered real improvements against our ambitious Council Plan priorities.

Our bold regeneration programme in Barrow-in-Furness, delivered with BAE Systems and Government, is one of the UK’s most exciting place-based schemes, with over £200m investment already secured. We are also developing a new Local Plan to deliver ambitious housing growth and playing our part in the Government’s Devolution Priority Programme, with the potential for a new Mayoral Combined Authority from 2027.

We are now seeking an exceptional Chief Executive to lead us into the next stage of our journey. We want a visible and inspiring leader of people and place: strategic, decisive and collaborative, with a strong record of delivering change and building powerful partnerships.

In return, you will lead a talented, committed workforce and play a pivotal role in shaping one of local government’s most exciting stories and helping to make Westmorland & Furness a truly great place to live, work and thrive.
