In March 2021 it was announced that the Humber was to gain Freeport status. This was driven by an ambitious collaboration between businesses, the four local authorities and the two LEPs from the Humber area and will result in a hugely exciting and far-reaching economic transformation. Already home to the UK’s busiest port complex including the four major ports of Hull, Goole, Immingham and Grimsby which combined handle around 17% of the nation’s trade, the Humber Ports play a vital role as strategic assets in the fabric of the UK. Spanning a wide area on both banks of the Humber, the Freeport will stimulate growth and investment, with a focus on renewable energy, carbon capture, port and logistics, food processing, advanced manufacturing and chemical and process industries.
With a shadow board already in place, the Freeport is now seeking a talented and experienced Chair to offer strategic direction and effective governance as the Freeport completes its formal setup and delivery stages. This will include supporting the appointments of a CEO and senior team. Candidates will need a strong understanding of the opportunities presented by a Freeport, as well as the ability to collaborate effectively with a number of different partners including local business leaders, the local authorities and LEPs, civil servants, and government ministers. Acting as an ambassador for the Freeport and indeed the Humber region, you will champion and drive forward the development of the Freeport and its associated regeneration benefits for local communities.
