Head of Communications and Engagement

London Borough of Merton
Salary up to £84,600
Hackney

It couldn’t be a more exciting time to work at Merton Council. We are a borough on the rise, led by a fresh and ambitious new leadership and armed with some of the boldest transformation plans in London. Merton encompasses the towns of Colliers Wood, Mitcham, Morden and Wimbledon and is home to a vibrant, growing population of more than 220,000. We are proud custodians of some of the best sporting heritage in the world and Merton’s connectivity is unbeatable in south London; we are at the start of both the Northern and District Tube lines, which offer direct access into central London in just 20 minutes. We are a borough going places – we have a brand-new blueprint for the future that will see us unlock the full potential of our borough and build a better Merton together, putting the needs of our residents at the heart of everything we do.

THE ROLE

We are looking for a communications leader with the vision, and the storytelling powers, to put Merton firmly on the map as London’s Borough of Sport, to promote our place, and help to shape our future.

You will be an outstanding communications professional with substantial experience of working at a senior level within a public sector or not-for-profit environment, and with a track record of working successfully with elected members. You will have an understanding of and passion for community engagement; for listening to and working with our residents, staff, businesses, and partners, and for bringing people together to make ‘Merton United’ a reality. You will be a strategic thinker and planner, but one who is equally comfortable in delivery mode. You will bring expertise in media and issues management, digital comms and marketing, brand management, campaigns and evaluation, and staff engagement.

Reporting to the Executive Director for Innovation and Change, you will be a key figure in the leadership of the organisation, providing strategic advice to the Chief Executive and the Leader of the Council, as well as the wider senior management team. You will be an inclusive creative, and values-driven leader, committed to the development of your team, and to promoting diversity in every aspect of your work.
