The College is at an important moment in its development. We’ve just begun work on a new corporate strategy to shape the future of the College as an institution and of the specialties we serve.
At the heart of everything we do is our purpose: to ensure patients benefit from the highest possible standards of care in anaesthesia, pain medicine and perioperative care. Standards are not an abstract commitment for us – they are the mechanism by which patient safety is protected, every single day, in every operating theatre and pain clinic in the country. The overwhelming majority of anaesthetists practising in the UK have passed through the curricula, training programmes and examinations that this College sets and safeguards, and our examinations are well recognised, both in the UK and overseas as a robust and fair standard in anaesthetic practice. Getting those standards right, and rigorously maintaining them, is one of our most fundamental responsibilities as a professional body and as a charity.
As we develop our next strategy, we have an opportunity to think carefully about how we uphold and evolve the standards that underpin anaesthesia, pain medicine and perioperative care – ensuring our curricula, assessments and quality assurance keep pace with the profession while never compromising on rigour, fairness or consistency.
THE ROLE
We are looking for an experienced senior leader with a strong track record of leading education, training, examinations or professional standards within a complex organisation. You will bring a deep, practical understanding of education and assessment – as well as the judgement to hold that rigour even under operational and financial pressure.
You’ll oversee the UK anaesthetic training programme and our curricula, credentials and assessment frameworks, ensuring they remain valid, reliable, fair, inclusive and delivered to consistently high standards, with robust arrangements for standard setting, moderation and quality assurance at every stage. You’ll also maintain the regulatory relationships across the four nations, while developing commercially viable opportunities to extend the reach of the College’s education and examinations expertise in the UK and internationally, without ever diluting what those standards represent.
