Assistant Director Waste, Fleet and Environment

Bradford Metropolitan District Council
Salary £102,714 to £116,121
Hackney

Bradford is a district with real momentum. It has one of the youngest and most diverse populations in Europe, it has just come through a landmark year as UK City of Culture, and it is putting that energy into a long term plan for fairer opportunities and stronger communities. The Council’s plan builds from that, with a focus on fairer opportunities, stronger neighbourhoods and services that people can rely on.

THE ROLE

The Assistant Director of Waste, Fleet and Environment leads a large operational portfolio covering waste collection and disposal, street cleansing, parks, green spaces, allotments, household waste recycling centres, workshops and fleet services. You will manage a workforce of around 500 FTE and report directly to the Strategic Director of Environment.

There is a significant programme of work ahead. The council is preparing for the next phase of the national Simpler Recycling reforms, with further changes to kerbside collections due from 2027, and the Assistant Director will lead the council’s wider response to national waste and resources reform. Alongside this, there is important work around fleet strategy, depot consolidation and using data and digital tools to improve productivity and performance across the service.

This is a demanding role that needs resilience and energy. You will need to build constructive relationships with recognised trade unions through periods of service change, and lead visibly and credibly across depot-based teams and crews as well as with elected members and residents.

We are looking for an experienced operational leader who is comfortable with complexity and ready to take on a portfolio that is stretching but carries real scope to make a difference.
