Starfish Search is working with an international membership organisation to identify a highly experienced Interim Head of Finance. Reporting to the CEO, you will join at a critical time of transition as the current Head of Finance steps down. Leading a small team, the role will support the organisation with the preparation of robust financial information, systems optimisation and delivery of refined grant-funded project accounting.

THE ROLE

You will:

  • Lead next financial-year budget with senior leadership.
  • Strengthen forecasting, cashflow modelling, and scenario planning.
  • Provide strategic insight and support to Trustees and SLT.
  • Provide financial insight for SLT decision-making and performance review.
  • Improve alignment with Projects and PMO.
  • Produce accurate management accounts and Board-level commentary.
  • Lead annual audit and statutory accounts preparation.
  • Maintain strong balance sheet control and cashflow management.
  • Strengthen financial controls, procedures, and data governance.
  • Ensure high compliance standards across international programmes.
  • Foster strong collaboration with Project Accountants to improve tracking, forecasting, and risk management.
  • Prepare and upskill the team ahead of appointing a permanent Head of Finance.
  • Lead through process change, system adoption, and cultural improvements.

You will have:

  • Experience managing restricted/unrestricted grants in international or multi-donor environments.
  • Ability to review grant-funded projects, assess donor conditions, identify compliance gaps, and standardise project accounting.
  • Visible, supportive leadership — ability to mentor and build capability within a small finance team.
  • Experience resolving legacy finance process issues.
  • Ability to maximise use of newly implemented system Iplicit (reporting, workflows, controls, integration with project/PMO teams).
  • Track record of implementing process improvements in charities or complex project environments.

This interim assignment is expected to run for a period of 6 months with the potential to extend to 12.

The role can be done on a 4-day work week basis, with an office presence of 1-2 days per week required.
